Back in them days (early 90s) shiitakes were going for 50$ a pound (our price, cant imagine how much dem Japs were paying) and the legendary matsutakes were at 100 per pound. My famuly did a lot of grinding, however were never luckuly enough to find the legendary drop.

Then, we got corals, hedgehogs, black trumpets, shantrails, morrells, puff balls... and when we were super poor, the amenitas to sell to the local hippies. All but the last, we would saute in butter and (box) wine, and put them in our ramen with some frozen vegies. Ah, the good ol' shitty days. Glad we can afford real food finally, but really miss the shrrom hunting... it was great family binding time.

Japan is still expensive and Matsutake is easily a liveable business if you have a source.

Ah, butter always works!

Never put them in ramen. They are a side dish in Japan and used sparingly in food normally.

That does sound like awesome family bonding time!
