Restricting spam =/= censorship

https://voat.co/api/bannedhostnames

It's not arbitrary. Places like Amazon are in there. Blame the spammers and use archive.is or something.

and if it's not actually spam? It's just some admin who doesn't like a certain website?

There are only two people, far as I know, who have/had the ability to edit that list. Atko and Putt. Neither of them seem the type to say 'Hm. I think I'm gonna go ban a few thousand websites from being advertised for shits and giggles'.

I would have to retort: If you don't trust them at least enough to manage a banned domain list, why are you here?

Tsk!

That was more than enough spam to justify banning that domain. And you knew it, already. Shame.

If it's banned, it's very likely because a single user was spamming links to the domain. If you'd like to find out more, go to https://searchvoat.co, search for libertyfighters, and I bet you will find the domain termination thread.

This one was shut down because of some accounts that were using vote manipulation and linking to the site. Kind of a higher priority, compared to the normal bans.

While a temporary ban could've been in order, I'm not sure why a permanent ban would be needed for this one. At the time of it's banning, the domain was -not- solely associated with the accounts in question, like awdnews was. In fact, it seems that legitimate users were linking to it both before the wave of spam and through two weeks after it, until it actually got shut down.

I've got no solutions for this myself. I'm just stating what had happened, for anyone else reading it.
