CNN is corrupt and should be archived in the OP. It doesn't deserve our support. Please keep this in mind for future posts.

Sounds like her lawyer is aiming for some amount more attainable.

Whatever she might win, minus the lawyer's cut, will likely just end up in the casino's vault along with all her past welfare checks.

This made me laugh more than it should have. You are absolutely right though.

Is this CNN' s way of playing into the narrative that, "The lower class aren't poor, just temporarily embarrassed millionaires"?

Never trust casino slot machines. This just reeks of a scam through and through.

This is not the first casino to do this. Happens more often then you may think. Winning is not a malfunction, and the state needs to get on the industry to do right by the people. The problem is that they simply do not want to pay out these progressive jackpots because of the enormous amount of money involved; in this case double digit millions. The bosses simply do the math: Go back and forth to court for fifteen years using jackpot money for lawyers or pay out 42 million and take a big, big loss. What happens if someone wins again in two weeks? Oh, no! It's a no-brainer, looked at through the casino's dirty lens. They rather fight you than pay. So what is a poor bastard supposed to do? I would do like the super computer suggests in War Games, the movie: Just don't play because there is no way to really win.

I've never seen a slot machine award more than $100k, including progressive jackpots, outside of the special room with $5+ slots. Even the progressive slots take forever to really get anywhere. They barely go up faster than $.01 a second.

Its pretty easy to believe that it was a malfunction, especially when you see how close her winnings($42,949,672.76) are to the maximum value of an unsigned int(4,294,967,295).

Good point about the unsigned integer! The jackpot amount is posted and shown increasing as the gaming progresses in any casino I have been to: sample http://gamblethenwin.com/first-interstate-progressive-jackpot-by-igt/ If the amount on her screen is different from the posted amount then a malfunction may be said to occur. Do we know if that happened? If you do please send me a link.
