Russia Sanctions Issued by Senate for Election Meddling | Time.com

'Senators on Wednesday passed the bipartisan sanctions legislation 97-2, underscoring broad support among Republicans and Democrats for rebuking Russia after U.S. intelligence agencies determined Moscow had deliberately interfered in the presidential campaign. ', "But Tillerson urged Congress to make the sanctions legislation doesn't tie the president's hands and shut down promising avenues of communication between the two former Cold War foes."

'Secretary of State Rex Tillerson offered tepid support for the sanctions measure, telling the House Foreign Affairs Committee he agreed "with the sentiment" among lawmakers that Russia must be held accountable for its meddling in the election. '

'The sanctions measure has been attached to a bill imposing penalties on Iran that the Senate is currently debating and which also has strong bipartisan support. '

'Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., a member of the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees, said the Senate has finally confronted Russia. '

The only problem with this is that the bloviating and lack of clarity makes this look like a scattershot childish move. In fact, I think it is fairly obvious Russia was interfering.

They definitely used social media to try move the narratives and most people on Facebook and Twitter don't notice when they are arguing with shills as opposed to other citizens with genuine opinions. It also appears they did in fact hack into various electoral computer systems.

I don't think they changed the election at all, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't punish them for it. I spanked my kids when they broke the rules even though I knew they would. Putin is no different, but much more dangerous. He will take everything he can get and he will never stop pushing the boundaries.

We should impose very stiff penalties, but they should be for things we know he did. Claiming shit that is probably not real weakens our position. The problem isn't the sanctions, it is their weak justification.

Meanwhile, it is clear Mexican interference had some influence on the vote totals:

I'm not sure what should be done precisely to stop the above but that it's been ignored in favor of this Russia narrative shows how much Democrats control the narrative.

Yeah. I have no problem coming down on them, too. But I think the type of sanctions pursued with a country like Russia are not the same. Mexico is one of our biggest trading partners. So we need to find ways to hurt them without hurting ourselves disproportionately.

Also, Russia is close to being a peer when one looks at the international arean. Mexico is not. Sometimes that means being harder on Mexico for the same infractions. Sometimes it means being harder of Russia. But the two are different calculations. With Mexico the biggest punishment we can give is simply returning all their wayward citizens. (And enacting money transfer protocols making it more difficult for illegals here to expatriate our money.)
