A closed beta is necessary for an MMO or any type of primarily multiplayer game. The closed beta finds bugs, stress tests servers, and in general smooths the transition to release. It also helps people who are new to the game or MMO's in general by allowing people who are better at figuring out those systems to make guides and how to's thus making the beginning for some players smoother and more enjoyable. Founders packs are sightly different as they are more of a release and are more stable but offer rewards to those who are very interested in the game. The only betas i have been in off the top of my head are ESO and Wild Star and have been in WoW expac Betas as well and none of them have really ruined my experience in the games and if anything it saved me from buying ESO at first (Bought Unlimited later) and i never picked up Wild Star because that setting didn't interest me.
