I vote to keep that island of welfare spics an island of welfare spics not a state.

My bullshit meter is tingling. "We're failing because our debt has reached critical mass! Bail us out US government!!!"
But I actually know little of PR. Is there a good reason for them applying for statehood other than needing a bailout? Why now?

Puerto Rico is desperate for a bailout. Sixty years of socialist policy has left them economically crippled and hobbling toward a similar fate as Venezuela. They need to become part of the Union because they cannot stand on their own.
The Puerto Rican equivalent to the baby boomers (whatever they're called) are reaching retirement age and have no safety net to rely on. Their economy is facing collapse because old, non-working people are very expensive -- mostly because of healthcare. Their old people are desperate to become Americans so they can live another twenty years and not have to pay for it. Perhaps they should just die.
One thing for certain is that if Democrats were in power, they'd make PR a state in a heartbeat to bring 3.5 million new Democrats/Communists into their voter base. If PR wants independence, give them independence. But stateship? lol. They're not even white

60 years of socialist policy might be enough to REDPILL them into fiscal responsibility. Look at the Cubans, experience tends to change minds.

Umm no. If they want independence, that's fine. Let let become their own country. But not part of the USA.

All their people are citizens with free travel and American passports too. It's best to let them in and court them for votes in the mean time. They could be a great tourist economy if properly explored.
