Long hours, not enough time at home with my family
[–] joseremarque 0 points 2 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago
Not necessarily. I said that at an interview at a big law firm and was promptly shown the door.
[–] PM_ME_YOUR_BOOBS2 ago
really, I guess I need to brush up on my interviewing skills.

I don't, but I will if you pay me better.

A culture built upon profits, Not "Respect for the individual". Bad managerial practices, bad planning and bad preparation. The lack of employees working means that more work is pushed onto fewer people, but this isn't taken into consideration when evaluating performance.
[–] joseremarque 0 points 3 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago
Bad mouthing your former employer usually does not sit well with interviewers.
Then why ask the question? If I had no issues with my former employer, WHY AM I GETTING A JOB WITH YOU!? Obviously I don't like my previous job, that is why I'm coming to you for a different one.

"My current employer is excellent and has been supportive of my career and personal aspirations. It is in that vein that I am leaving them, as I want to develop my career in a different direction than they have operational needs for. In true fashion of the classy folks they are, my managers are supportive of my desire for a career elsewhere from the company."

It's boring. As most things become, after you've done them for a decade.

Because I'm sick and fucking tired of my boss. He's an arrogant jackass that thinks he knows everything. The guy actually has zero experience when it comes to being a manager. He was a regular engineer that got promoted to director of an entire region. This fucking jackass does not know the job and is extremely critical of anyone that knows more than he does. This poor example of leadership loses his temper in zero seconds flat. To the point that it surprises everyone. Of course, I'm not the only person having trouble with this piece of excrement. I thought about going to HR but that will only make things worse. He will not be fired, and he will eventually exact his revenge.
Just today this fucking moron demands that I be in the office at 8:00 am sharp but has absolutely no fucking problem calling me at 6PM or later. Told me that I lie to him, and that I should check up on my employees by tracking them with the GPS units the company installed in the vehicles. Even though HR specifically said that was a big no-no. The GOS system is only there to provide emergency services if needed or to look at an employees history of something comes up. So when I ask him to put it in writing he tells me that he didn't say anything like that. This wonderful example of a fascist dictator wants to call me at 8:00 AM every morning to make sure I am at my desk. Even though my job requires me to support technicians in remote locations throughout the south east. And in the same city, meaning it is unlikely that I'll be at my desk at 8 AM and even if I am, there is no guarantee I'll be able to answer his phone call unless I hang up on someone that needs my help.
This fucking large ass piece of Santorum wants me to drive a company vehicle back and forth from work to my house so that he can track me. Even though I am not required to drive my vehicle home. And even after I told him that take my child to and from school/daycare. It's worth mentioning that I have been working for the same company for over 20 years, ten of those years have been in the current position I am in. I have had several directors come and go and I have never been this frustrated with another human being. I've never even been so much as written up or had a verbal warning for anything. And this short cold drink of Santorum comes along to make my fucking life miserable.
Fuck me, if only I was rich!
Edit: Please disregard this response. I just realized you meant interviewer as in job application. Not interviewer as in 60 minutes. I'll leave it up in shame and also it kinda felt good getting that shit off my chest.
Edit 2: to answer your question though, I would tell an interviewer that there is no possibility of moving up in my company and I have worked very hard at what I do. I would probably list a few things that I have accomplished in my field.and I'd tell them that I was looking for a challenging job/position. I'd also research the fuck out of their company to see what I can offer them and make sure that I slide that in the conversation.

"I'm looking for an opportunity to advance and that opportunity isn't available with my current employer. May I ask why the current position is available, and if advancement will be a possibility should I be hired?"
[–] lovemeplz [S] 0 points 2 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago
What if advancement isn't a possibility? I feel like this question is shooting yourself in the foot, potentially.
[–] Vladimir_Komarov 0 points 4 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago
If advancement isn't a possibility, it may not be the place to work unless other amenities are offered. Remember that an interview works both ways, the applicant should be interviewing the company as much as being interviewed.
[–] c15co 0 points 5 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago (edited ago)
Definitely agree that the focus should be advancement but it should be from old job to new job rather than from new job to new job. Internal promotion opportunities are important and companies will want to be seen to offer them, but they also are reluctant to hire someone to a role if that person already has their eye on the next role.
[–] Vladimir_Komarov 0 points 3 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago
I agree that the goal shouldn't be a race to advancement, but investigating the possibility as well as the companies track record on promoting from within should be weighed in the applicants decision to take the job or not. Just my opinion though.
[–] normal_dude 0 points 1 point 1 point (+1|-0) ago
That's not bad, but most interviewers are very good at detecting bullshit answers if you say them just to make you look good. Unless you're really charismatic, you should always go with the honest answer first, unless it's something really awful like "I hate my boss".
[–] seiyria 0 points 1 point 1 point (+1|-0) ago
Eh, in my industry you advance by changing jobs, thankfully.
