I don't blame you for blocking /v/politics, and I certainly don't fault you for not visiting the_donald. In my first few months on Voat I had /v/politics and /v/news both blocked because they utterly consumed my front page. I have them unblocked now and frankly they still consume it. I do find it nice seeing the takes on current events that you won't easily find elsewhere.

Do we want to be the anti-reddit though? Just the same thing with a right wing twist.
I just wanted a forum online where you could literally have your say without being written off as a jew/shill/nazi/cuck/nigger for having an opposing opinion. Downvoating dissent is almost patriotic in v/politics at this point.
And I feel like when I first came here (you and I joined within a couple weeks of eachother); that was the general idea. Nowadays, idk.

I agree things have changed, and no I don't think we want to be the anti-reddit. I don't think we are, either. At least not yet.
reddit may be largely left-wing (because the ban the right-wingers) and Voat may be largely right-wing (because it consists of the banned right-wingers) but that does not make us opposites. As long as Voat continues along the path of freedom we won't just be an anti-reddit. As long as we aren't banning people for having left-wing ideas, or shadow-banning users with problematic views, or removing content that we deem unacceptable, we will not be an anti-reddit. Even downvoting "dissent" is fine, because it does not remove the comments, it only collapses them. Collapsed comments are often viewed highly, in fact. People are curious.
Sometimes people downvote and move on, but other times you actually get explanations, debunking, and discussions explaining the different points of view. Only the negative CCP restrictions create even a slight aspect of Voat that is marginally similar to reddit. Even restricted users can still post their views -- just not as often as they may like. We have rogue moderators from time to time but we have no admin censorship or banning (except for vote manipulation, spam, doxxing, and the posting of illegal content, all of which are easily justifiable). Alternative subverses can be created without issue.
Politically we may be the opposite of reddit, sure, but I don't think that's a bad thing. As long as we don't use the same dishonest tactics as reddit in order to preserve our nature, Voat will be fine. There are plenty of leftists here and I see them speaking their minds all the time. Maybe not as often as they would like to, but the ideas are out there.
