Most of what I know regarding my studies and future work is dark according to lay standards, but what I would consider the darker amongst them is that how in my field (healthcare), often the case in mismanagement and lateness of action is due to the administration and bureaucracy involved, as well as the general infrastructure, but this is in a 3rd world country, I do hope the condition is better in places where people are paid to actually care about what their work does to others.

My wife works for and we are insured through a MAJOR healthcare provider in our state. I have noticed something on my chest that I firmly believe may be a Melanoma. I have been waiting 7 weeks just to see my General Practitioner for an evaluation and referral. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.

This happened to my father. He was having chest pains, trouble breathing. He was in his 70's. Took 2 months to see a specialist, do blood work and get x-rays, was diagnosed with pneumonia. Gets antibiotics. 3 months later is dead from lung cancer. Misdiagnoses + antibiotics + shitty shitty specialized health care did him in. We can't find a lawyer anywhere to start a lawsuit, because they all say the problem is so common the courts won't do anything about it.

You are going to die, and when you do you will cease to be.

There won't be any eternal anything. Your brain will release all the neurotransmitters it can, you'll see lights, hear voices, see people, as each part of your brain slowly dies your perception of things will shift and flow. You'll likely feel peace, but you might feel terror. Time won't matter anymore but things won't last long. And then just like that, you'll be gone.

There isn't anything you can do to change this fact. Its coming, its happened to every single living thing that's come before you, it'll happen to every single living thing that is here now. For every want, every desire, every goal, and every plan you have, it'll all be gone and so will you.

How could anyone possibly know this?

Its a known process when the brain starts to lose oxygen. When we train astronauts we put them in strong centrifuges that simulate 5x the pull of gravity or more. This causes the blood in the brain to stop circulating and temporarily starve out the brain. The subjects pass out and experience all the claimed effects of a "near death experience" including a tunnel of light, hearing family members, seeing people they know, talking to them, etc. Its an effect of the brain firing off everything it can to try and save itself. Allegedly the feeling is euphoric as the brain dumps all kinds of neurotransmitters like dopamine.

Its the process that happens as the brain shuts down. Its been studied pretty well.

This is my solace, and a source of happiness for me. This is actually my favorite fact. And Perhaps the most loving description of it. Thank you.

Interestingly enough this doesn't bother me. I almost died in a car wreck, but once I came out of it I realized that "Yeah you're going to die one day, might as well make peace now." - so the realization that I'll cease to be one day, doesn't really faze me any more.

Its something I've always struggled with. Call it the Atheist's Burden if you want. As much as I want there to be an alternative to death, I don't honestly see one, so I can't believe in one. And yeah, that scares me.

Its changed my view on a lot of things. Like I'm pretty anti-death penalty now days. Not because of some peace loving hippy reason, but because I have come to decide that ending a person's existence is on a level of crime that is so horrible and vast that it should never be institutionalized. "what if they are Super Hitler?!" Still. Revenge should never be the goal of Justice and I can't condone ending someone else's existence, institutionalized or not. The only exception would be if it would directly save the life of someone else. (Plus its just wasteful, use the person somehow, ether in science or in physical labor. Don't just throw them away.)

But over time I might come to terms with it. As my daughter grows up and becomes more self reliant its seemed easier to cope with my own mortality. Maybe there actually is something to be said for living vicariously through your children.

Guy kills this woman's daughter then sends a letter to the mother detailing how and when he killed her.

Albert Fish I think. He was quite deranged. He would take corpses from the graveyard and skin them to make momentos.

Grace sat in my lap and kissed me. I made up my mind to eat her, on the pretense of taking her to a party. You said Yes she could go.
