Spanking is fine provided one knows how to use it.
Children need to punished in accordance with their temperament and not the caregivers preference. The best punishment for one child is not best punishment for all children.
Some kids need to be spanked. Some kids time outs work wonders other kids will melt from a stern look.

In my experience, the smarter they are the more likely they need to be spanked.
Dumb kids will take most everything a caregiver tells them as gospel truth and don't usually disobey with intent.
Smart kids will always test you and push your boundaries and see mild punishments as a calculated risk so show of force is necessary.
