They honestly don't care what the two of you do; at that age, they just want to be around you and help. That's how you build a strong bond with them that you can then use to keep them from ruining their lives as they get older.

The one thing I wish my dad had done was actually letting me help when I was there to help.

The number of times that he'd show me how to do something but then not let me participate were so numerous that I stopped asking to help.
