General Lee wasn't even some bad guy by today's standards. He didn't have any slaves, and indications show he really only led the confederate forces because his state wanted him to

The artist would probably find that pretty hilarious. Artists don't think the same way as others, they tend to be perfectionistic and are happy to burn months of work, as a matter of course. Especially in this case, having made $$$ off of working for the establishment, it probably felt like redemption.
