No they don't. Automobiles will still need coverage against uninsured motorists, crime, weather, liability, etc. In the case of a self-driving car being at fault in an accident, the parties may have a product liability claim against the manufacturer. If self-driving cars make roads safer, then the risk calculation changes and insurance companies will lower prices as much as they can to compete. The end result should be that fewer people go uninsured. Everyone wins.

Insurance prices won't go down where it's mandatory.

The companies have a clear arguing point to raise them actually, all the fancy tech makes cars cost more to repair and means that little things like a tree limb falling isn't a dent pull but a full sensor check and replacement depending on the location it hits. Plus the tech is new and changing constantly so there is no surplus of parts laying around, as well as this requiring more well trained techs meaning repair costs go up, add in that repairs on the self driving carry a bigger risk of mistakes costing lives means that the repair shop has to have more insurance so they also raise rates meaning they pass that cost on as well.

In a law suit they always go after the deep pockets.

There is one entity that losesĀ and is fighting this thing behind the scenes the hardest... your local governments will lose $BILLIONS in tax revenue generating tickets!

The software developer. They're actually driving. Well, unless a sensor is defective, then it would be the sensor manufacturer. Well... good question.

or if it is parked and charging then the maker of the cord or the plug or the batteries, or if a tree falls on it when parked then the homeowner.

Realistically I expect little to change, the owner caries insurance and they pay out then they pass a bill on or sue to recover their loss on some cases.
