Eh, games like Minecraft were spread purely by word of mouth for years. They just need to make better games and people will talk about them.

True but it's very rare that games will be able to strike gold like that by making a game that can appeal to all ages, etc. and it's very risky when you're spending money making it. When you're spending hundreds of millions making a game, you aren't going to risk a lack of marketing. Indie games are the only ones that really get the luxury of aiming for that because they need so few sales to make their money back.
