That's the same reason I use Navy Fed Credit. Had to many problems with BofA and Wells dicking me around with my own money. But now I mostly save up with Gold instead.

Been a USAA member for two years. One word: Awesome.

The customer service is outstanding. The mobile tools are excellent. Haven't been hit with a fee for anything yet.

They do not service commercial customers--meaning they don't do businesses--which in turn means I am the real customer as retail member. Any bank that services business and retail customers is using the retail customer's money to fund the loans to their commercial customers. YOU are not their customer. USAA doesn't, as of yet, do commercial lending or servicing. Yay, us members!

A couple of other cool things about USAA:

1) They took NO MONEY from the government during the bailouts. NONE. ZIP. NADA. And they grew.

2) They are a bank for the middle class--not for the elite. From the above linked article:

By its very definition, USAA serves the middle class. It does business only with current and former members of the military and their families. Studies have shown that the U.S.'s all-volunteer military is dominated by members of the middle class, not the elite.

I love being a member of USAA!

They refund ATM fees at the end of every month, and you can use I think UPS stores as the brick and mortar part. If you can, use USAA. They also have loans and investing.

Thoughts on Chase? I haven't had any issues with them in my experience.

I run an auction site and constantly have people trying to dos / ddos my site. Most of them come in via vpn services. I outright block any offending IPs that starts attacking my site. That's bound to stop some legitimate traffic, but I have to protect my site and users. I guarantee BOA is probably doing something similar and you're inadvertently being caught up in their net.

EDIT - Like others have said, get away from using Banks. Go open an account at a local credit union, they actually care about their customers and provide better service.

I think a lot of people don't think about this.

I think you are all reading too much into this. BOA takes security VERY seriously. If you are coming from a known VPN address, that raises numerous red flags for fraud detection.

I assume you get annoyed too when someone asks for ID? Or when the CC issuer makes them call in to verify the purchaser? This is all to protect your account and their bottom line nothing more nothing less.

This is the real reason. Companies will gladly sacrifice the tiny amount of legit customers who use a VPN if it will also cut down on the amount of fraud they experience.

Time to switch banks, for more reasons than just this. Most likely it doesn't like so many people attempting login a from the same IP. But rather than forcing 2fa to add security, they are just blocking VPNs.

Eventually there will be nowhere to run. I mam seeing more and more sites denying VPN's.

High gain wifi NICs and open WLANs. oh, and the ability to 'open' a WLAN - typically child's play...

Remember, banks are in charge. They don't like subversives. Anything that gives you security and privacy is against bank policy and you won't read that in any published information. Why do people still use BoA?

A VPN doesn't give you much security. It gives you privacy, and the bank doesn't care whether you have that.

Just.. don't use BoA. They suck. Go to a small, local bank or find one of many credit unions you can go to instead. They're the worst bank in the country. If you need ATM availability, go to Chase, but BoA is not worth your time.

Banks log IPs.

An unkown IP triggers extra security or in their case a public IP gets you denied.

Most people want this, and if you aren't using a vpn this is a pretty good idea.
