Sounds to me like there is an evoloutionary psychology principle in action here. I dont know what it would be. Perhaps ambiant hostility triggers a threat response to remove themselves from nonviable breeding groups at the onset of fertility.
You are probably on to something here, It would be interesting to see a scientific correlation to the sub-conscience mind of a young child to run away from a broken home in order to find stability.
