As someone from the poorest state in the US with both Nissan and Toyota plants 10.50 with overtime is almost a win fall for most people with just a highschool diploma or GED. And these companies have increased the lifestyle of many people. After ten years at Nissan, depending on your natural ability you can move up into the $20 hour plus range which is good living here. Its sad this happened but I don't think you can entirely blame it on the manufacturers. Before the manufactures it was farm accidents and there is little to no safety regs in farming.

'The pressure inside parts plants is wreaking a different American carnage than the one Trump conjured up at his inauguration. '
'Parts suppliers in the American South compete for low-margin orders against suppliers in Mexico and Asia. '
'That gap has narrowed, but the incidence of traumatic injuries in Alabama’s auto parts plants remains 9 percent higher than in Michigan’s and 8 percent higher than in Ohio’s. '
'She’d worked at two other parts suppliers in the area and found the pace and pressure unbearable. '
'Three years earlier a press operator on the plant’s safety committee reported a near miss on an identical machine after the light curtain failed to pick up a worker. '
