An activist is someone who sincerely wants to change world for the better, and so volunteers a significant amount of their free time to the corresponding issue or issues they feel strongly about. Most I've met have normal jobs and are intelligent hardworking people.
I think people around here obsessed with some retarded brand of racism or sexism qualify.

You could be an activist without being paid and simultaneously having a job. Really, activist is not defined by monetary aspects but rather by them doing something for the cause of something / an organization. This could be 1 hour a month or 1 hour a day, but activist usually describes someone who is very active (so people probably would shy away from calling a 1-hour-a-month person an activist).
