Yeah...that wasn't a satanic killing, they were making a sacrifice to santa muerte.. Not a lot written about her in English sadly, but I guarantee if you go to your local bodega they have prayer candles to her.

Yup, she's a folk saint/goddess that seems to be a fusion of Catholicism and Aztec spiritual practices. As mentioned in the linked wiki article she's probably Mictecacihuatl, the Aztec Goddess of the Underworld.

My understanding is that worship of Santa Muerte and Jesús Malverde is fairly common among cartel members and criminals down there.

EDIT: Mexico has shittons of folk saints.
