What people disagree with is voting replacing discussion in an up./down single tap form of communication of what has come to pass for discussion on reddit. Voting up and down has replaced discussion skills in some "other" website.
You really must be kidding on the upvotes indicating better discussion skills. Look at some of those topics, the first twenty comments sometimes are entirely about memes and have nothing to do with the original subject.
Well, I agree. On the site-that-must-not-be-named, Le Reddit Army and SRS would brigade anything they didn't like. Not anything that didn't add to the conversation, but things that they disliked. These users would also create throw-away's to help brigadeing, and the 100 upvotes to downvote requirement is a genius move to curb the bad part of that community.
The vast majority of my down votes come from the recent events. I was saying the banning of child porn sub's was good and paedophiles were down voting me since they didn't want to come forward and disagree with a comment because that would reveal them as a paedophile.
I will wear those downvoats with pride.

I am for downvoats and I am for removing the fact that you have downvoated from the profile. Everything seems designed to be very similar to that other site in form but in function there are a lot of little hidden mechanics dissuading people from having opinions.
