In today's worlds, aircraft carriers seem especially vulnerable. I often wonder if they are not now the equivalent of battleships at the beginning of WWII, when it was discovered that the carrier was really king and the battleship concept old school.

It's my understanding that the aircraft carriers purpose is to project a nations military power abroad by providing the navy with a mobile aircraft deployment platform and base of operations. While I've no doubts that technological advancements will ensure the carrier has more sophisticated vulnerabilities to anticipate and adapt to, in order for the aircraft carrier to truly become obsolete your enemy has to possess the ability to bypass engaging your overseas assets and directly strike both your military and elected leadership. Then and only then could the aircraft carrier become obsolete and that's only if military leadership doesn't develop more autonomous command of fielded assets.

They are only useful for beating up on Luddites. Submarines are the only ocean going vessel that would survive a real war.

Considering the anti-ship weapon systems that Russia have developed the age of the aircraft carrier is already over.

I wouldn't say over.
New developments lead to new developments. Just look at how the battleship is proposed to house rail guns. Eventually we'll figure an effective defence and the arms race will continue.

You better come up with some good ideas... fast. There is a Mach 6 missile incoming and you have a few seconds to react.
