Myth busters had an episode on this. What I don't understand is how goats made it this far in the evolutionary cycle.

I haven't seen the episode but my goats do not do this and love these sorts of games/toys. So it isn't all goats.

Fainting goats are actually a defense mechanism for a heard of goats. They will faint for a few seconds and it gives the rest of the heard some time to run away. Not so good of a defense for the individual goat, but hey someone has to be the decoy.
