The CS department at my University has these sorts. I avoid them like the plague. Luckily for me there are enough people who have an actual work ethic and are there because of the industry, not the fucking video games. Most group projects I seem to gather the "normal" nerds around me, other vets, people with jobs already, young adults with a good game-plan. Do note: it gets better in the later classes, as most of the lazy fatties don't make it that far and the general BF% of the classes goes down.

Is there any way you can make groups with your friends? If not, make sure to set up meetings in public places. Not one of their (mothers) places. Preferably a library or some other "quiet place where you can focus on work"
Try to have a timeframe for how long you are going to do the meeting for. If they start talking about Anime/video game/whatever tell them you want to focus on the project, and we (read: they) can have fun later. Even if the timeframe is 'all-nighter' and they think they can afford some downtime, tell them an all nighter means working all night, and if we get finished then we can at least get some sleep. If they keep it up, pack your shit and say "I guess you're more interested in being social. I'm really not in the mood. We should plan a time to meet up to work on the project."

You're just "focusing on the task at hand" and "being studious" ... yeah :)
Seriously though; having some causal chit-chat and taking a smoke break every hour or so is one thing, but do you really want a project meeting to turn into watching multiple episodes of MLP while each of them eats a whole pizza to themselves?

You won't end up like them. It's attitude and discipline, and as much as anorexia is a horrible illness, it requires a hell lot of discipline to do it.

ugh I know right?
I kinda take that as a motivator to always go to school well dressed, to not gain weight, etc; because I'd hate to fit that stereotype.
