This song (as well as several other songs) is usually misattributed to Johnny Rebel; it is most likely performed by David Allen Coe.

Johnny Rebel (Clifford Trahan), who passed away last year, seems to have made only about twelve songs (most of which are rather funny).

I'm only seeing that one of Coe's songs, Nigger Fucker, has been misattributed to Johnny Rebel.

And according to this record cover, he wrote much more than 12 songs. Tough to tell if this particular song is his though, owing I think to the similarity of all country singers back then, and the difficulty of picking it individual voices on old recordings. But I could believe this was Johnny Rebel.

Actually I just found this album, The Complete Johnny Rebel, apparently released on CD in 2003 with that rebel flag album cover. Contains the song Cowboys and Niggers.

Edit: The title of the Coe song is Nigger Fucker, not Nigger Lover.

That album contains several misattributions, i.e. "Ship those niggers back", which is performed by Otis Cochran & the Three Bigots. "Segregation Wagon" is definitely performed by Colonel Sharecropper, and afaik "The Great Society" is as well.

However, going through all the songs again, I must admit that something occurred to me that might suggest you are right about "Cowboys and Niggers": although I find Trahan to have a very recognizable, somewhat high pitched voice, this voice is not heard on Kajun Ku Klux Klan, which is without any doubt performed by Trahan. So, apparently he has a wider range, or some oddity in how the recording are rendered account for the difference. But, the voice in Kajun KKK does not sound unsimilar to that in Cowboys and Niggers, meaning that might be a Johnny Rebel song after all.

So, it might be the case I stand corrected. Hats off to you!
