TRS-80 Model 100, which at the time I got it was considered worthless. But that's the kind of thing that adults will put into the hands of children who tear things apart, old gear nobody wants anymore. Found an old book in my school library on BASIC programming for kids, and used that to figure out how to play a few games I had to type in manually.
We kinda went backwards a bit, when we stopped building small computers that could boot directly into a language prompt. They're the ideal learning tools.

My first computer was a Sony HitBit 75P, i bought it (used) with my own money back in middle school (or was it the year before middle?), it was wonderful and i'm still very fond of it. I remember waiting for 3 minutes while it was loading from tape the only game i had (you really did appreciate games a lot more when you had to wait for 3 fucking minutes to play them... of course if the loading succeded... chances were you had to rewind the tape and start it all over again because of noise or volume too high or too low... it was very common to wait for 3 minutes just to read "ERROR" on the screen). I learned programming on it, i used to stay up at night till late to program on it (i would go to bed until my parents went to bed too and then i would get up and use the computer till 2 or 3 AM). It only had 64K of RAM, no hard disk, no floppies... yet it is still my preferred computer... i spent on it so much time and so much effort that it is like remembering a good old friend.

My neighbor had a trash 80. I learned basic on it and considerd it a toy since I was working as a programmer on IBM mainframes then.
