Interesting article. I initially got to know Chmierlaz via his involvement in GamerGate (though he mostly remained at the sidelines); later bought The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and found it to be a pretty good mindscrew experience despite of it being a mere walking-simulator from a gameplay perspective.
CD Projekt Red picking up the series imho was the better outcome - it's not that I don't think that Chmielarz is a bad writer/designer, but if I understand this correctly, they would have had to follow the original Witcher novels - and turning books into video games usually does not work well unless you have some degree of artistic liberty.
The Witcher game that never was • Eurogamer.net
"In all the hubbub at E3 surrounding The Witcher 3 - many people's game of the show - it was surprising for me to discover that there was another Witcher game, a long time ago, that I had no idea existed."
'Here, Robert Purchese reveals the story of the Witcher game that never was in an article first published in June 2014. ', "And it's here that in 1996 and 1997 - six years before developer CD Projekt Red was founded - a game called The Witcher was being made.", "While his Witcher wasn't supposed to be a role-playing game - the style made famous by CD Projekt Red - it was going to have some RPG elements.", "It was going to be an action-adventure game, Chmielarz's Witcher, with moral choices, mature storytelling and psychologically complex characters."

Interesting, graphically it looks like it's using pre-rendered backgrounds. It reminds me of another PC game called Dark Earth. It probably would have been a decent, if unspectacular title from the look of things.
Still, I'm glad to see it all turned out for the better for everyone involved. CD Projekt gave us three amazing games, the Witcher's creator got his games and Adrian Chmielarz went on to create the awesomely underrated Bulletstorm and the critically darling Vanishing of Ethan Carter
