Hey - it's me. I came back looking for a link I couldn't find and tripped across this. The only reason I created an account to respond is that I don't want evil conspiracy theories cropping up behind me.
Earlier today I posted a little memorial photo of my father on /v/pics with a "Happy Father's Day - I miss you, Dad." He was a great guy and I like kind of being able to shout it from a mountain. I don't expect many, if any upvotes from it - it's enough for me to post it.
The immediate reaction was that it "didn't belong" in /v/pics - it "belongs" on Facebook, and that the title was "sensationalized." Note that the post at this point was already at +13 and climbing.
I realized reading through those comments that the rules insanity had spread here and it was never going to go away - that the people who feel the need to control what the masses are allowed to vote on have established that walled gardens are normal, and before long life on Voat was probably going to be just like the crap that made reddit suck - subs run by people who know better than the participants what "belongs" there.
To reiterate - I posted a photo of my father to /v/pics, and the response was "this (photo) does not belong (in a subverse named "pics")"
After angrily responding to a few of the comments, I took a step back. I don't need to invest my energy in people who want to control my entertainment - I can just walk away.
And so I did.
Good luck to Voat, and Atko & Co - it's a great start, and they certainly have the right intentions. You folks remember that the best way to improve the signal/noise ratio of subs is to submit more stuff. Be supportive, and if you can't say something nice, just downvote it and move on. For the love of God stop worrying about whether something "belongs" somewhere. Someone posted it in good faith - just let the community vote.

And, of course, my axe.

The mods in v/news are already deleting and censoring posts
