Why is Microsoft giving away free copies of windows 10 anyway? They normally charge 100$ for an operating system and they are just giving this away? Are they gonna sell our user data? Is there iaps? How does Microsoft make money by giving away free products that cost 100 bucks a pop?

Support costs. It's far cheaper to bring every one to the same level for support in terms of bugs and development than it is to keep developing or supporting multiple platforms. It won't do away with it entirely but it will reduce it greatly.

Microsoft makes most of its money (regarding Windows, not their other services) from licenses with OEMs. Microsoft also spends a significant amount of money maintaining old versions of Windows and making new software still be compatible with old versions. They have an incentive to keep everybody up-to-date and minimal cost because eventually that user is going to purchase a new computer.

They give up a tiny source of revenue, but they also (ideally) shed a major cost.

I had honestly thought Windows XP would be my last Windows, and at its EOL I'd make the full switch to Linux. I then obtained a computer with a W7 license, learned to like it more than XP, and have licensed it on several more computers I own.

That said, having worked with W8.1 and W10 both, I'm 100% absolutely certain that at W7 EOL I will be making the full switch to Linux.

I agree. Enough games are coming to Linux now that I'll finally move my gaming rig to Arch. Then I'll get an Ubuntu phone and everything I have will be real Linux. :3

If that means that I am able to get a pirate copy of it that I am then free to edit with something like WinReducer before installing it, then this is excellent news to me. It would be a lot harder to get hold of a pirate copy of it if it was only available via updates. And out of anything I have ever pirated I don't give a shit about Windows because the only reason that I use it is that 99% of game development companies are too busy sucking micro soft cock to bother with even considering releasing a Linux version. I use it because I have no other option in many cases. To me that's a monopoly. And that makes piracy of it 100% justified in my opinion.

Have you tried Wine instead of probably exposing yourself to a botnet?

Well I'm at the point with my PC where the maximum that it can manage as far as gaming goes is Skyrim (I mean I could probably run GTAV if I pushed it but I'm not interested in reducing draw distance or spawns or anything). In Windows it runs between 30 and 60 fps depending on the location and situation. In Linux through Wine it runs at 10 fps at best (I haven't checked the exact value) and is pretty much unplayable. The same goes for any of the newer games I've tried in Wine. And any other PC games that I play are older and easily emulated in DOSbox or VirtualBox.

My idea is to set up a Windows partition dedicated to gaming and hopefully find a way of stripping it of it's ability to connect to the internet. Otherwise I just won't tether my phone to it and it won't have access anyway. Every other partition I have is Ext4, swap or EFI. Windows only gets what I give it, it doesn't even have access to my movies or music collection, save a few choice songs for use in San Andreas. I'll try Wine again when I have a newer, better computer.

I checked out the pirate bay to see what people said about this upgrade.

Apparently people with a pirated copy of 8 are able to reserve a copy of Windows 10.

Well I am running a pirate copy of 8.1 and I do have the little upgrade icon but honestly I would prefer not to take any chances. Also, I usually prefer to do clean installs of my OSes from time to time, particularly with major updates. Also, if I organize an iso of it instead of upgrading to it I will be able to edit the installation before even starting my install to remove any undesirable elements from it. I'm actually even considering stripping my copy of Windows from having the ability to connect to the internet altogether so that it can stay contained in it's little partition and not do anything that I don't want it to do. There are alternative ways of installing Windows updates.

No. I love Linux myself, but it's not just the devs holding back gaming. It's shitty drivers as well. And a little bit of the "It's not open-source, I won't have it on my system" rhetoric from it's users. The linux community has made a toxic environment for game developers that want to actually make money. It's getting better- and hopefully Valves efforts will help, at least with Debian based distros, but as of yet, there is no reason for AAA devs to support linux from a profit standpoint.

Yeah you have a really good point there actually. A lot of the Linux crowd are completely elitist and hipster and hold back a lot of possible progress in the name of 'purity'. And as for the driver situation on Linux, this should tell you how I feel about that: fuck you AMD for your shitty half assed Linux drivers that are only slightly more useful then the generic drivers while faithfully releasing awesome updates for Windows all the time. I didn't buy my graphics card for Windows, I bought it for my COMPUTER.

I signed up for the upgrade. I have the icon in the corner. For free I will try it out.

Same here. If it is free I will try it out, but I have my windows 7 disk near my PC to go back too if I do not like it.

Free for one year.

Then you're stuck.

Well... I am sure by then there will be a work around. Thanks to our fine group of hacker buddies online. Haha

You must claim the update within one year of Windows 10 being released, but once you've upgraded you don't ever have to pay. It's not a "one-year trial" or anything like that.

EDIT: JesTheRed has a much better source than I had. Read his post below for clarification.

Windows 10 will be THE big brother on your computer.

What do you mean by this? Are there major privacy concerns with regards to Windows 10? Haven't really been up to date on the whole release

Dont really know the technical detail. I deleted the preview very fast after i found my mailcontacts and phonebook numbers in skype synced with facebook friends without even a question if i want it or not, or option do disable it. It killed the whole wow thats actually awesome feeling using it. Reverted back to W7 and i will not switch if i have a say. There is a reason M$ will give it for free to big userbase(W7-8.1).

Linux will be never a gaming platform. M$ will continue to throw money at game developers to make sure. SteamOS is a small step on the way, but while Linux fails at basic steps like dont shut the damn monitor down when i watch youtube...

I seem to have missed something, what the privacy concerns?
