I've done that... with official sanction.

As for paying Geek Squad employees to do it, that violates at least a couple of computer tampering laws, and is a felony.

That's stupid. That's like asking a shady mechanic to find problems with your car. "Looks like you need to refill your headlight fluid!"

What I'll never understand is why people can't do their own PC maintenance... It's not difficult, you don't get dirty and sweaty doing it like working on a car, instructions and even 1 on 1 advice is readily available on the internet in any form you could possibly desire... there's always someone in the family willing to teach...

Boggles my mind. ESPECIALLY if you have shit to hide.

Ive seen the customers of Geek Squad. Many also own H3/H3 Hummers.

I knew there was a reason I never trusted those beetle driving washouts. Anything Geek Squad is qualified to fix, a capable user can fix on their own with DIY forums and patience.

Anything Geek Squad is qualified to fix, a capable user can fix [...]

You haven't dealt much with the average public, have you? I have dealt with people that don't even know what a power cord is, let alone a power supply, heat sink, BIOs, or registry.

That said, about the only reason I'd take something to them is to avoid voiding a warranty. In practice, though, I don't think I will ever take anything to them, even if they weren't blabbing to the authorities about everything they see. At the bare minimum I'd fully expect them to rummage through all my files to try to find something.

Can't really say I'm surprised by this. Also, it seems like quite a dangerous thing to do.

I.e. "Hey guys, look, I 'found' something! Payout, please!"
