It could also be the power lines themselves for whatever reason. The Star Wars blaster noise was actually recorded in a very similar manner, tapping on a tensioned steel cable of some sort.
This will have the conspiracy kooks in a tizzy now every time the news mentions the Northern Lights. It's now going to be a code word for them about the ongoing reptoid occupation and liberation efforts.
