Special Report The dictionary defines charity as unselfish acts that benefit other people. Google boasts that it does a great deal for charity. So how come the biggest beneficiary of Google’s charity seems to be Google itself?

How Google.org stole the Christmas Spirit • The Register

'Most requests are for staples, but most grants are for hi tech equipment, particularly in the form of Google Chromebooks. '

'So how come the biggest beneficiary of Google’s charity seems to be Google itself?'

'The teachers request what materials they need, and donors pledge to fulfil the requests. '

' That would buy a a few exercise books - a wish that Google's favourite "charity platform" can't seem to fulfil. ®'

'A teacher at Timberland Charter Academy wanted funds to “become ‘Google’licious”, and submitted a $2,097 request for Chromebooks. '

I hate charities that suckle so much from their donors before passing any of it onto their stated cause. It's why I never accept when people try to get me to donate in public, because I don't know where the money is actually going.

Find a charity run by college students. Those seem to give most bang for your buck.

Yep, play up the "good cause" angle and you can get away with murder.

Always remember that Google avoids paying taxes as best they can, despite always painting them selves as being left leaning politically.

We don't take education seriously in the U.S., if we did, this would not happen. The current "education" system is nothing more than an indoctrination center for the current "truth" or social memes. There is scarce time for reading, writing or arithmetic. No time for real history, physical education, art and music. However, plenty of time for Islamic studies, LGBT, and how white culture has exploited and destroyed minorities. Apple has been "donating" hardware for years starting with the apple II, IBM, Microsoft and now Google is in on the fun. Nothing too evil about this other than corporate interest exploiting a need for their own purpose.

The oligarchy makes sure public schools are funded just enough to do the job they want. Critical thinking is not required, just thought consistency across the board.

Home schooling is possible now, and perhaps this is the best way to get a real education.

So, just to make sure I got this right. Google is giving away Chromebooks in a tax conscious way and people are unhappy.

All big corporations have done this for years and it is a tried and true method. Nothing really wrong with it since usually everyone gets something out of it. It's only wrong when they go to lengths to hide it.

After having been exposed to Mac's back in the late 80's because college required the purchase of a Mac, it wasn't hard to see how it all worked. I saw it more clearly back in the mid 90's when I was working at a major university and involved with the annual donation program (this high end university did not need donations from corporations, but all universities do this.. its part of their game). Microsoft donation of computers with the stipulation that Windows had to run in them (early days of Linux) in an effort to push out the trend towards Apple, Sun Microsystems donating $1m of servers for their infrastructure, SGI Indy's for their graphics labs. It's all about exposing people at their formative years to a tech that they then become loyal to.

There are tons of charities out there, many worse than others. Very few (if any) are run without an underlying motive.
