90% of which are pixel graphics platformers and indie releases - there has been a growth in AAA titles but not nearly enough (yet) to bring linux forward as a gaming platform for the average home gamer.

Because inde devs are up to date when it comes to the best software. AAA studio get paid to develop on windows by Microsoft and are forced to use DirectX, Internet Explorer, Clippy, and MSBob.

Nothing wrong with indie releases. In fact, even amongst Windows users, indie titles have become very popular.

Besides, I can't remember a triple A title that was last released that I had as much fun playing as Stardew Valley, Crosscode, BroForce etc...

Meanwhile I can't get Steam to start on 2 different linux laptops. I've download and run it and it's in the applicaiton launcher, but when I try to launch it nothing happens.

run it from command line. Here's what I use to launch steam:

LD_PRELOAD='/usr/$LIB/libstdc++.so.6 /usr/$LIB/libgcc_s.so.1 /usr$LIB/libxcb.so.1 /usr/$LIB/libgpg-error.so' /usr/bin/steam

Did you use Ubuntu software manager or the installer from steam? You should use your distro's package manager.

You might be missing some dependencies. Find the steam binary, open a terminal in that directory and type: ldd ./steam to see which libs are missing. Then find the right packages to install those libs.

Search around Askubuntu. They probably know what to do.

This got me to check steam and I saw that the latest Deus Ex is on linux and it's currently on sale for $19.99. Merry Christmas to me.

The game runs pretty badly, but not because it's a terrible port, it's just a crappy engine.

Also, it runs better on AMD hardware but only officially supports nvidia on linux.

I get like 20-25fps in most places on a gtx 970.

You're right. Whenever I came up on an enemy it'd drop to 19FPS on Ultra, Very High and High. I didn't feel like screwing with it anymore after that. I've got a water cooled 1070 that's overclocked as much as I could push it.

You should check back tomorrow when the Winter Sale is on. I hear MadMax will be going cheap.
