Honestly, I never liked OpSkyNet, because it looks like one big circlejerk to me, and god knows we already have enough "e-celebs" on twatter whose sole claim to fame is having many followers, rather than dispensing valuable info. Furthermore, following that many people only dilutes the flow of info with unnecessary drama (which Twitter produces no small amount of), so I prefer only actively following 15-20 people/ news sites which I trust on the issue.
If you want to get a hashtag trending, it imho would be easier to ask one of the big fishes for a retweet rather than following 10.000 people who only clog up the hashtag with drama.

It does the job, sometimes you just need to trend something!
And everybody getting a bit of familiarity with twitter is good, if only just to have a sense how it works when stuff from there is posted.
