Sorry: No, people who are on GQ lists probably do not tend to pay their employees more than they have to. No, even powerful people probably do not tend to pay their employees more than they have to.
Retaurant and bar workers make minimum wage and tips. That's how that industry works. There is nothing even remotely "strange" about any employee at any restaurant or any bar in the country being paid only minimum wage plus tips.
Thank you!
I guess this kind of opens up another can of worms in which the question is 'should tipping exist?'.
The intuitive experience for a patron is to pay only one time. If you don't tip, it's considered rude.. but why not just add on a gratuity or hospitality fee to the overall payment? It's implied that the money you spend up front covers every component that is required to make the operation happen.
I'm on the 'No' side of that fence and there are more and more places increasing the wages of their employees so tipping isn't needed.
Minimum wage should be for trainees.
So depending on the lens you view the world in, I suppose it can be either strange or not.. from my perspective the people that have the influence and money have the means and ability to enrich the lives of those that helped build up theirs.
