We use "customary" weights and measures, as there is no one source from which they all derive prior to being formalized.

It is called imperial in Autocad but it is not british imperial because british imperial is different from american imperial.

Lengths are the same between the two systems. Volume is one thing they violently disagree on, as well as most any weight above the pound.

My point is, without a federal government you wouldn't even have an agreement within the US. Progressive states like Hawaii and the west coast states would adopt the metric system and Alabama would probably revert to a Robert E. Lee-inch or whatever.
