Wait. If they're bound in most places, why even have them? This is something about the electoral college that doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't be people. Should be automatic "candidate won, candidate gets votes". Why do we need people to cast the votes we already cast?

Because free people frequently vote for their own destruction. The purpose of having electors is to restrain the mad impulses that sometimes overrun the mob. The Founders had just watched the French Revolution, and were eager to keep men like Robespierre out of power, democracy be damned. They also had the example of the Venetian Republic, which lasted a thousand years by electing the Doge through multiple layers of voters.
