"It's California. The place is gorgeous and has a BANKRUPT economy about the size of Russia." Fixed that for you. IMAGINE the economy when their chief source of income - illegal alien subsidies - dried up! They wouldn't last the first month before screaming to be American again.

I believe California contributes more to the federal treasury than it receives. The illegals, say what you will about them, also help the economy in driving California's agricultural industry. So there are two sides to that dynamic.

The illegals cost CA government $25 billion a year. Tell me again how this helps?

California is a drain on everything. Why is it the rats are the first to leave a sinking ship?

There is no legal or constitutional way for a state to secede from the union. A civil war would be the only option.

In practice they probably won't even make it on the ballot to vote on it. When Alaska secessionists tried it the federal courts barred it from appearing on the ballot. At that point it'd take something wild - perhaps California's state government ignoring federal court rulings in order to proceed on the issue. I don't think Democrats in California are prepared to do that.

California has most of the tech. The top tech people live and work there.

They also have NASA, Tesla and weapons manufacturers.

They grown enough food to feed the rest of the country. Most of the Midwest grows corn.

There are much better cities outside of CA though. Chicago, NYC and Boston put LA and SF to shame.

Beautiful land in CA though, everything from deserts, mountains, oceans, islands, whatever you can imagine.

Yes, and then we should clone Sherman and let him lose in San Diego and tell him not to stop until he hits Oregon.

The next Sherman may be from Dixie too. One of history's great ironies.

But if California secedes I could see a scenario where large numbers of Mexicans get driven out of America as the US military advances.

In short the ideal is to keep California and lose the invaders. There would be no issue without them. California used to be the land of Nixon and Reagan.

If they want to, yes. And we have no right nor moral grounds to force them to stay. To oppose secession is to oppose the sovereignty of a collection of people who wish to peacefully withdraw from the central government to pursue their own majority rule. Opposing secession is dictatorship, and it is a moral atrocity. If Californians overwhelmingly wish to secede, there is no moral ground to stand on in depriving them that sovereignty. Our country seceded from the British Empire, and we are hypocrites to prevent secession from our new American Empire.

What is really stupid about this though is that Californians don't want to secede at all. The Left survives of the backs of the Right, both in their material necessity and their existential longing to impose their lifestyle and ideology on as many people as they can possibly force to adopt it. Their lust for control over others knows no bounds, and it certainly does not allow for downsizing of their sphere of control.

This Californian secession thing is pure hooplah generated to keep us from talking about the Clinton/Podesta child sex-trafficking ring in the upper echelons of world government. Stay spicy, my friends. Shut up with the California.

Really, I guess the Confederacy will rise again with that logic.

No, Americans should not support the balkanization of their country.

Too bad, it's our land now.

I don't agree that there is some transcendent right to secede from the union. But in California's case it'll likely be a Mexican driven project if it happens. Mexicans that are relatively recent arrivals and whose forebearers came illegally in many cases. I think that severely undermines any moral argument on their behalf. It'd just amount to colonists grabbing land from the United States in effect.

California has a large economy, and gives the federal government more than it gets. Also, they have a huge chunk of our technology sector. I'd rather they stayed.

I like the hypothetical war scenario where the US retakes it and colonists leave, but if let go, losing California would result in the border DOUBLING in size.
