Destined for War: Can China and the United States Escape Thucydides’s Trap? - The Atlantic

'The defining question about global order for this generation is whether China and the United States can escape Thucydides’s Trap. '

'Attendees at his funeral included two “chief mourners”—Edward’s successor, George V, and Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm—along with Theodore Roosevelt representing the United States. '

'And yet 100 years on, World War I offers a sobering reminder of man’s capacity for folly. '

'Ongoing debate about the causes of the First World War reminds us that each is subject to competing interpretations. '

'In 1914, few could imagine slaughter on a scale that demanded a new category: world war. '

Either war or mutually beneficial symbiosis. Thucydides didn't have to deal with Mutually Assured Destruction, nor bioweapons that can eradicate entire races.

What a stupid article. Written by someone who knows nothing about China. Beijing is rather risk adverse. It is a land animal. It would totally unprepared for a naval war in the South China Sea where there are no allies to lean on during a time of crisis. Manila may be leaning toward China, but they can't rely on the Chinese. Vietnam is hostile to China's intentions and has bad blood with China.
