Someone has to pay more because a flat tax is often not enough.

And I never said the government helped them. I said society did. Nobody ever becomes rich in a vacuum. They use publicly educated workers, publicly funded roads and infrastructure, their businesses kept safe by police, etc.

Are they not already giving back by creating jobs

Sometimes, but often what they take out is greater than what they put in. For example look at wallwart. They effectivly use publicly subsidised workers. They do not pay out a living wage, they take in far more than they give back, and it is tax dollars that have to pay for the social services that support their workers.

I swear, socialists are keen on biting the hand that feeds them.

You've got it backwards. Its the poor and middle class that feed the rich. If all wealthy people disappeared, it would be simple to replace them. If all the working class disappeared, the rich would fall apart without them. And, I'm not a socialist, I just believe in a fair tax system.

How can a flat tax not be enough? That doesn't make sense. Many people used to become rich by going to cheap private schools, paying toll on private roads and generally paying solely for what they needed. Why do you feel thats no longer the case. Yeah, you say we could just replace the rich, why can't we just replace the middle class? That's just simplistic nonsense. And what do you think the criteria for those who replace the rich should be? I'd say it should be those that work hard in smart ways. And you'd like to punish those people with increased tax? If you say families like the Waltons take advantage of the low minimum wage and tying money up in assets, target those loopholes and make the loopholes illegal, don't punish an entire class of people because not everyone of them is a Mr. Burns like villian. If many people from the middle class or working class were finding loopholes to pay less tax and the government responded by increasing tax for everyone in that bracket there would be outrage as some would be innocent and it's not right to punish them. Why not apply this same logic to the upper class?
