Ontario has a graduated license system. Written test gets you your G1 (learners) which allows you to drive only with a licensed driver in the passenger seat (plus a bunch of other rules). After a road test you get your G2 which allows you to drive on your own (but you must have 0 blood alcohol and there are some restrictions on passengers if you are still under 19). To get your full license you have to do another "comprehensive" road test. There are minimum wait times between G1, G2, and G (full).
That said, our roads are still full of idiots. It doesn't help (well it has reduced accidents for the 16-19 age group but that's about it).

If the road is already gov paid and the test is already gov administered, upping the tests difficulty doesn't seem like much of an increase in government regulation to me.

All that will happen is that there will be way more unlicensed drivers
What I would like to see is better enforcement of the laws. Reality is that the self driving car will be the cure for shitty driving.

As self driving cars come in, maybe we should hold people to a higher standard before letting them on the road? It would make sense to ramp up the difficulty as the cost comes down, and the average skill of robodrivers rises.

Yeah, dude. I'm all in favor of compulsory Defensive Driving courses, as well. People also need to stop being so afraid to drive in weather of any kind. You don't have to act like a rally driver, just don't take a full minute to take a right turn.
It's not the guy going 20 over on the highway that you need to worry about. It's the woman doing her makeup, while scolding her kids in the back seat that kills people. People who don't take care of their cars are a good indicator of a bad driver, as well, but this is not universal.
I see a lot of hysterical fucking retards on the road, who don't know how to ease into a brake, constantly on their phones, fuck, even my mother texts while driving! It's infuriating.
Oh, and Snow Tires, if you're in the north. Why the fuck do people consider this to be an option or luxury? I got my car a set of Pirelli SnowControls and it just wants to eat snow for breakfast. Another good brand of snow tire is Hankook WinterPike and Winter i-Pike tires. I don't know if they make the former anymore, but the latter is studdable as an option, and I swear by them. Never once have I lost traction in my Jeep.

Same, I speed whenever I can. 55mph is pathetic, I drive a car that can handle a medium turn in the hundred-plus range, why should I be limited by half that in a straight line?
I don't really hit triple digit speeds that often, but if the U.S. got its shit together and built a coast to coast autobahn, I would for sure.

if we're talking about USA. fuck yeah!
we should all pass some sort of basic test, WELL beyond the standards we currently had. Things like lane usage, and FUCKING turn indicators!!
there used to be Driver's Ed when i was in high school. Eliminated now.
EDIT: and following distance. you aren't going to get there any faster by riding my ass

I think for the driving test you should set off on a road course with 2 cars chasing you. and try to run you off the road. if you get away you pass. get caught and your raped and fail. You will have less people trying to clog up the roads. only the bravest will get driver license. I'm sure there will be some that are kinda into getting flipped over in a car then some anal on the side but. Hey anything's porn right.
