The proper answer is by @srgmpdns
I've drank lots of various ground waters, streams, springs and wells along with accidental ocean, lakes and various types of hot springs (the type you bath in outside up in the mountains).
City water tastes like shit. Actually, tastes like ass.
However, I did live in an area with a major label beet factory and they used city water which happened to tweaked for them especially. So the residents got really great water.
Somw spring water will freeze really hard andnis fucking awesome for drinks. One bar I used to go to, the owner would drive 3 hours every week just to get a certain spring water to make ice cubes. I knew the place and was some of the best natural water I've had and actually keeps 2-3 weeks in a jug.
Anyway, tell you fiance that yes, water has a taste by its very nature by coming from the ground.

Nah, get the right spring water and use it for ice and your whiskey will jump to life.

I have heard that drinking absolutely 100% pure, laboratory-quality water is a strange and dangerous thing.
Google 'drinking pure water' and you'll get all kinds of warnings not to do it.

So, yeah, the taste comes from dissolved minerals and salts, not from the water directly.
