They actually do. Suppose Hillary wins. Further suppose we fast forward to 2020 and the GOP takes the white house. What is the locus of power and influence for the DNC? They don't (and probably won't) control the House or Senate. They've lost the state legislatures, and don't have any particular claim to gubernatorial power.
There is no spot from which they can leverage control of legislatures. It would be better for the party if Hillary lost, they could spend the next four years enjoying the tendency for those in power to be saddled with blame, and the typical waning of that party's legislative control.
If dems control the Senate (by simple majority or even a tie) and the Presidency for the next two years they can go full nuclear on day one and put any nominee into Supreme Court slot without any republican votes and fill the huge backlog at all other levels in the judiciary for the next two years non-stop. Should that situation come to be tomorrow night my guess is republicans will give Obama's guy the job now while they still have some input because come January they won't have any at all if they fuck around even a little bit more about it. Dems might just appoint Bernie to top slot at that point because they can :)
It's never better to lose.
