I'm unsure what you mean by conventional unless that you mean extract has a wider meaning for usage. The point is that the two words extract and excerpt are synonyms and either would be sufficient. Though if anything I think excerpt would be better suited for a longer passage than the extract I posted.

The conventional use of extract typically refers to a substance. Where as the only use for excerpt is a passage from a longer work.
