Look at /v/climate vs. /v/climate/new. Anyone looking at that sub would think no one's posted there in over a month.

Not sure that I agree. One of the things I didn't like about that other site was that if you didn't comment in the first 12 hours, there was no point.
I like the fact that conversations here can continue for days or even weeks.
When older posts get buried quickly the conversation dies. And people who show up late don't even bother to contribute because they know it won't be seen.
I understand your point though. I don't have an ideal solution, but I do like that older interesting posts stay relevant longer.

I'd rather make it so there's a way to set the "default" view of your sub. So mods could make it so when people go to their sub, they're automatically directed to the new page instead of the hot page. Might encourage more people to actually browse the new content that's posted instead of waiting for other people to upvoat it.
