Are you frequently cooking for a crowd, or just generally just yourself? This will dictate what you need.
I use an enameled cast iron braiser in place of casserole pots & roasters. It's the work-horse of my tiny kitchen. Bonus it can go from stove top into the oven. I can fit a whole chicken in mine for roasting (which works GREAT -the lower sides allow for more air circulation than a dutch oven), but also use it as a sauce pan stove top and use it in place of casseroles.
I would definitely recommend getting baking trays -they are multi-functional, cheap and don't take up much storage space.

So the only thing a steel pot does better than a casserole pot is that it's cheaper and possibly heats up faster?
