Sony just got too greedy. If they released it as a $20 or even $40 early access tittle then no one would be complaining. Yeah I understand that this game was supposed to be the next Minecraft, but the thing is Minecraft was more of a sleeper hit, that got big just because of people playing the game and word of mouth. Basically they tried to do a triple A release strategy with what ought to have been more of an organic process like an indie title. And that might have gone some way to deflating the hype a bit for the title.
What you have now is worst than if it was a shit game. That is a game that will never live up to its potential simply because they stuffed up the release and burnt their own fanbase. Which will likely die it's death from getting abandoned by the community. At best you might get something like Destiny, but I doubt that this developer has the resources to stick it out like Bungie.
That is if you assume that the developers weren't just being disingenuous from the outset and just trying to pull a massive pump and dump.

Always remember that this devs previous two games were Joe Danger and its sequel. It didn't even stand a chance. Where did all this hype come from originally? People trust shady Sony THAT much?

I feel bad for those guys. I think they really were passionate about the project, just very, very inexperienced in marketing and controlling their product messaging. The game was disappointing and brings up some major issues in ethics in video games marketing and ads, but was that all Hello Games fault? They were clearly naive in their PR strategy. Not saying they deserve a pass, but I personally believe the blame also heavily lies with Sony.
I do not envy their jobs right now.

I saw someone say something along the lines of: "best value for my dollar ever, paid 0.00 and I'm still entertained weeks later." This shit will keep happening as long as people give an interest free loan, wait excuse me "pre-order". Yikes.
