I like playing word games with my son. "Word chain" - he says a word like 'game', then I say a word starting with the last letter, like 'elephant', than he says 'tornado' and so on... I also like telling him crazy true stories from history, like Richard the lion heart fighting Saladins army without a horse. Or Che and Castro taking over Cuba from the imperialists (it's like true life Star Wars lol).

I want to get a co2 gun because it's fun firstly, but it also teaches him some respect and responsibility about handling a weapon and improves his hand eye coordination.

I also like teaching him about cool science stuff. Like balancing the forks on the edge of a glass, magnifying glasses to start a fire, baking soda volcanoes, shit, even Diet Coke and mentos.

This may get downvoted, but Pokemon Go. It's a good way to learn about the area you live in. You can talk about the historical landmarks you find and get your son to learn about your town/city's history.

Almost any activity you can do alone with your son or father is bonding. Just do it! Get off your ass, out of the phone, console, tv, or computer and do it. Get out of the house before they are grown. The only way you can fail is to wait 18 years and realize it's too late.

Most anything that involves the outdoors, hand tools, physical and mental hardship, failure, success, autonomy and safety.

Easy to use, fun to learn, relatively inexpensive and very expandable.

You'll get a lot of typical stuff here and that's all probably great, I'm gonna tell you something unusual my dad and I used to do that has stuck with me.

He worked shifts, getting home late at night some weeks or straight up sleeping during the day and working nights. In my late teens I was out with friends or at college/parties. We wouldn't see each other much but random nights when everyone else was already asleep we'd bump into each other as I got back from a bar and he was getting in or heading out to work. This is back when milk came in glass bottles dropped off at your door and the milk bottles had foil caps. He would flatten the caps and flick them like mini Frisbee across the room at us kids. So it became a thing, these random nights with a milk bottle cap frisbee flicking it back and forth in the dark kitchen just chatting about whatever came up. It was sometimes 10 minutes sometimes a couple of hours just standing at either end of the kitchen flicking this thing back and forth and talking.

We did a lot of stuff together when I was younger, hiking, working on cars etc.. but those nights really stand out in my mind as when we went from father and son to genuine friends.
