The Russians used grease markers when they ran into the dust problem, but of you ever used one you would know it's like writing with a crayon. This means they had to write bigger to make it equally as legible as a pen. This made writing in small portable notebooks a pain in the ass on top of the fact you're creating extra waste with the paper you peel away from the tip.

We did it to make the astronauts' lives easier, not because there was no other option. In space, every little bit counts.

No because it doesn't produce as much graphite as you think. It's a miniscule amount and most ends up in the filters and in this shaver vacum that filters air and graphite to recycle the air.

NASA loves risk mitigation. They would rather eliminate ANY graphite in the air than just say "eh, the filters should get it all. We will most likely be fine"
