Yes, this too! I have to say, the new left is suspiciously like a purposeful attempt to sabotage leftist ideas. Rather than focusing on class struggle and helping the poor using the help of the rich, we get middle class princesses who have no experience of poverty telling people how they're so horribly oppressed. It's turning classical lefties away and replacing a movement which could have been a threat to the bourgeois (to use a Marxist term) with something which hurts working class people the most.

Yeah, you wind up with really weird things happening like upper class ivy league college women telling some neckbearded dude who works at McDonalds and lives in his parents' basement to check his privilege while using their own to insult him. Sure there are privilege disparities between different classes or groups of people at the institutional or societal level, but the problem is that it totally breaks down at the individual level.

When they are telling a person whom they know nothing about apart from the color of their skin and gender to "check their privilege" they are pretty much asserting that the amount of bullshit this white guy had to put up with in his life is outweighed the amount of bullshit they've had to put up with as individuals. Apart from the fact that there's no way to know that, it really shouldn't even matter. We shouldn't pay attention to some person's problems because they're not as bad as yours so until that gets fixed we need to ignore this other guy?

The sjw princess types you mentioned are pretty clearly trying to control the cultural flow of information and ideas. Even though everyone has to live in this world, they'll instantly dismiss people's opinions what's not "I agree with you and now I will shut up" in discussions that are meant to shape the way people should be interacting with each other, just because of who they are.

I'll probably make many of these same comments again elsewhere because this stuff really bugs me.

I wouldn't say that the civil war is between authoritarian progressives and libertarians. I identify with neither.

The war seems to be between traditional liberals (eco-friendly, secular, education, etc. proponents) versus the new wave of young liberal extremists who care primarily about social identity and oppression.

You might find you align with the goals of more modern libertarians than you may have been led to believe. Sure, there are some pretty hardcore ancaps in the community, but at least from my experience the libertarian community is a mix of many kinds of minds, many of which fall under the category of pragmatic libertarian or consequential libertarians and tend to have more progressive social values. As an example, a more modern libertarian might hold the view that marriage isn't something the government should have business in at all (no government recognized contracts whatsoever = no drama), but many recognize this isn't a practical position, so in the spirit of seeking government policies that maximize freedom, they support gay marriage. I came from the left to libertarianism because I find it is the single most welcoming philosophy.

Definetaly been a word on top of my vocabulary as of late, that I find "classic liberalism" seems to be indistinguishable from.

I don't know what kind of libertarian I might fall under, but I find very little of it disagreeable. Maximize freedom for the individual, minimize government. The things I see being an issue is what makes me leftist, in that I do think a bit of socialism is a necessary evil where healthcare, prisons, education and infrastructure are concerned. I see a social safety net for those down on their luck being needed. I don't view businesses as individuals, and think they do deserve careful legislation with the underpinning principle that regulations should seek to discourage businesses exploiting workers and consumers but that the market should be otherwise free. But the problem is, enforcing or creating that increases the size of government.

I might be wholly socially libertarian, but the way I'd describe my financial attitude is "cautious". but yeah, not sure what it would make me.

You might take a look at left libertarianism. They claim "Free Markets and Social Justice".

Just be aware, you can't vote for Hillary, even if she's the nominee, if you really feel this way. I for one, would even only consider pulling the Republican lever for no more than three candidates, and if a Bush/Graham/Rubio/Pataki ends up the nominee, I'll just sit it out.

I highly recommend Gary Johnson. Just take a look at what he's accomplished by sticking to Libertarian principles. His main fight lately has been to fix our corrupt bi-partisan presidential debate system.

He also seems to have his stuff together personally. He's a triathlete and has summited the seven summits.

I don't think anyone is perfect, but he's personable, advocates policies that are fair to majorities and minorities alike, promotes fiscal responsibility, and seems to be a good role model when it comes to working hard to achieve personal goals.

don't worry, I genuinely wouldn't vote for her if my life depended on it. I'm actually from the UK, so I have no say. but yeah, please do not elect hillary. Elect hitler before you bring in Hillary. I see so many American civil liberties dissappearing with her in charge. But it must be said, even under the American interpretation of the word "liberal" it's more than a few liberals that are coming around.

Personally, I consider myself more socially conservative and economically progressive.

I'd like to see a criminal justice system that focuses on rehabilitation, but also holds individuals responsible for their actions and can determine if a person simply can't be rehabilitated.

I want to see the poor be helped and America's poverty and class issues fixed, but though work and never though handouts.

I'd like to see us gain control over our borders, but still be able to use immigrants for work anytime we can mutually benefit from it.

I want to see us bring back objectivity and standards. No more financing abstract art which must come with a paragraph of text to be meaningful. No more massive gender studies departments which come up with a new reason every week why women aren't in STEM. No more identity politics. I want to see a common culture encouraged in people, I think "diversity" can only be preserved if individual cultures are preserved, and that internal homogeneity, the idea that your neighbor has the same beliefs and lifestyle as you, has many benefits for people.

I also want to bring back more traditional values. I don't care if homosexuals can get married or not, but marriage itself is an institution which has been pretty much been destroyed. Gay or straight I'd like to actually encourage people to commit to each other rather than have the divorce rate be between 40-60%. Women shouldn't be turned down for a job because of their sex, but on the same note it's possible and would be very beneficial to go back to a time where only one person needs to work full-time to support a family, and the other can dedicate time to raising the children. I think plenty of women would like this as well.

As far as I know I might literally be fascist, but I really do think there needs to be a rebirth of the right-wing. A real right wing not focused on religion, or lining the pockets of the rich, but one based on the benefits of social cohesion and unity.

None of this I find even disagreeable. For me it's about preserving personal freedom and an approach to those goals, most of which I find perfectly in line with my own. A way to attain those goals that isn't authoritarian in nature would suit me. What big government does to sweden, maybe I can't support a fascist approach but I appreciate and agree with 80% of your end goals. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by objectivity and standards, as that could apply to science, morality, philosophy, etc and in multiple ways for each thing. I'm indifferent to marriage as an istitution, I don't 'like' handouts but think they're a necessary evil for the genuinely down on their luck. I'm not someone who cares much for tradition. but all of that's why I'm not a conservative.

I don't really know where to take this and what conclusive statement to draw out of what I've written to you. Just, this seems to reinforce my thinking that while we can disagree I'm coming to a position of left Vs Right being unimportant because it's arguing over things who's consequnces are minutiae in comparison to the sheer disasters that come out of authoritarianism.

I think the problem we are facing is not one of isolation. We are facing an identity crisis as we realize political groups do not represent, nor want to represent, our demographic. Which is a great thing initially as it's lead many of us to realize the true nature of our political system, and open doorways that allow us to use skepticism and reasoning to choose specific items from either party.

The bad thing is, nobody represents us, and we're disorganized as a result. Our "constituency" is scattered among all states with no means to gain consensus locally while we work three jobs or rot in jails and prisons.

The best we can do is discuss and continue to seek reason and skepticism in our politics. No matter how much that pisses off people who pick parties like sports teams. Remaining intellectually independent is the most important thing anyone can possibly do.

Explore your options. There are always like minded individuals out there no matter where they self identify on the political spectrum. That being said there will always be infighting in political groups; everyone wants to think their vision is the one true way
