I always used to, but now that I am edging into middle agedness, I have been getting a little more casual in Hawaiian shirts and deck shoes much of the time, so that I am always ready to just fuck off and play hooky on the boat whenever I have the chance.

The mention of Hawaiian shirts and cargo pants/shorts make me think there are a ton of dads in this thread.

Need to clarify dapper.

Like button up-business casual or GQ?

GQ dapper is expensive and pretty much a hobby in itself. As others have noted it doesn't need to be expensive but in that case you need to know something about what you're doing.

Business casual I prefer because you can ease into elements of GQ dapper and still look respectable. Splurge on some quality shoes or a shirt once in awhile. Works for every day work and even if you're in the bottom half of well dressed people in the office (like me. I wear tube socks with wingtips. I'm not oblivious I just don't give a fuck because nobody says shit about it anyway and I think it's kinda funny) you're in the top half of well dressed people anywhere else.

If I could do so, I would. People appreciate it, unless they assume you're some asshole.

I dont, but when i do people that know me always say wow you clean up really good.. So dressing dapper would probably help me with first impressions, but im of the tribe of i dont give a fuck i dress like a basketball player most days... Jordan shorts flip flops and tshirts or jersesys from countries ive visted.

In my present, destitute state I could dress up nice but it would take a huge amount of effort and fuss (and gas money!) to visit all my local thrift stores on a weekly basis for several months and then learn how to tailor clothes. If I were wealthy it would simply be a matter of budget priority. Alas.
